David Murray

David Murray joined the National Industry Skills Committee at its inception in May 2006.
He was born in South Africa and gained his undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Science (Civil Engineering) from Natal University in 1978. A post graduate diploma in Engineering was awarded the following year from Pretoria University. David achieved success in the Advanced Executive Program from UNISA a few years later while working in various mine management positions.
David is a member of the following organisations:
- International Institute of Mining and Metallurgy Engineering Council of South Africa
- South African Institute of Civil Engineers
- South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy
He is also a Director of the Coal Industry Advisory Board.
From 1978 until 1999, David worked for the Trans-Natal Coal Corporation/Ingwe Coal Corp. He progressed through various operational, project and managerial positions and in 1993, was appointed Managing Director Trans-Natal. In 1999 David was appointed Chief Executive of Billiton Coal. In 2001 he moved to Australia and was appointed CEO of BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance, a position held till 2004.
Early 2005 saw David move to Melbourne to the global headquarters of BHP Billiton where he accepted the role as President Metallurgical Coal and since been made (2007) the President of Coal. He is a member of the BHP Billiton’s Executive Committee.
